With constant requests for airplane books at libraries, this volume, with its crisp color photography and detailed information about aircraft, is certain to be snapped up by eager transportation buffs. Although the book uses an alphabet-book format, with each letter, in upper- and lowercase, explained by one or more aviation terms that begin with that letter, the sentence definitions offer a level of sophistication not always found in such books. The text varies: some of the letters are defined by three words (printed in red), some by one or two, and not all are nouns. Some of the choices seem overly simple (doors for "D", nose for "N"), while others (throttle for "T", undercarriage for "U") provide engrossing facts for inquiring young readers. Although arrows indicating the exact location of some of the more complicated items named would have been helpful, most of the photographs offer excellent visual displays without them. A worthwhile addition to nonfiction shelves.
