Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paul Walter
"Fish, hike, swim and sing! Have fun camping with family and friends." The great outdoors pops off the pages of this book, thanks to the full-color, action photographs that accompany the text. Pictures show tent set-up and sleeping, first aid, and (most importantly) camp eats, such as roasted wienies and s'mores. However, as with other titles in the "Sports and Activities" series, the text falls short of the pictures' ability to pique interest in the activity. While the simple text is straightforward, easy to digest in its prose verse form, and well-suited for early readers, the static organizational pattern keeps any section from providing much detail. To counteract this lack of detail, suggestions for further reading are listed after the glossary of camping terms. Also intriguing is the invitation for readers to use www.facthound.com as a portal to further information. Once on this site, readers can choose their grade level and enter the book's ID code for age-appropriate, staff-researched links dealing with camping. However, the actual content found through this site was disappointing. Whether choosing grades K-4 or grades 5 and up, there is only one link available. The link, to the "Camping and Woods Safety" page on www.kidshealth.org is ad-free and informative, but deals with safety alone, not camping preparation or enjoyment. As with other titles in the "Sports and Activities" series, this vivid, well-organized book, while not necessarily deserving of the exclamation mark in the title, serves its intended purpose.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-These titles each have an introduction to the activity and chapters on "Equipment," "Safety," and "Having Fun." Early readers will like the large format; clear, attractive color photos; and simple sentence structure. Ski and Camping show children and adults enjoying these activities together. Specialized vocabulary is introduced with a relevant picture on the opposing page. The Web links listed use the Facthound search engine to reach further information but do not link to early-reader sites and so are more useful for parents or teachers.-Ann Robinson, Moultonborough Academy Library, NH Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
