Overview

The Deep River Boys first performed in public as a unit in 1937, then rose to prominence by making records with Fats Waller & His Rhythm ("By the Light of the Silvery Moon") and the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra ("Tuxedo Junction"). Released in 2008, Acrobat's "Let's Go" is one of the few CD compilations that combines the swing stratum with equal helpings from this group's spiritual and gospel repertoire and their swinging hepcat and rhythm & blues sides. Examples from the latter categories include "A Little Jive Is Good for You," "A Zoot Suit," Cab Calloway's hit tune "Two Blocks Down, Turn to the Left," "Charge It to Daddy," "You Talk Too Much," and "Get Up Them Stairs, Mademoiselle." Since most compilations devoted to the Deep River Boys seem to focus more upon their later recordings, this outstanding 28-track anthology gets highest marks for delving back and revisiting some of their earlier triumphs.
