Overview

Thirty surf and hot rod tracks that were released on or distributed by the Dot label in the 1960s; a couple (the Surfaris' "Wipe Out" and the Chantays' "Pipeline") were huge hits, but most of the rest were virtually unknown. It's a grab bag of a set, with further tracks by the Surfaris (a rare 1966 single) and the Chantays, the minor national hit "Boss" by the Rumblers, a strange 1964 minor hit by Pat Boone that found him imitating the Beach Boys with reasonable accuracy ("Beach Girl"), and collector's items by the likes of Don Brandon and Milt Rogers. It's not bad, but the best tracks are available on better surf or single-artist compilations. On the whole it's average surf music, with occasional ear-openers like the Chantays' spooky "Space Probe" or the the Rancheros' darkly powerful "Linda's Tune."
