Toddler-PreS-In this appealing volume, simple text and brightly colored illustrations invite readers to learn and practice Japanese vocabulary. As promised by its subtitle ("First Words for Everyone"), the focus here is on introducing commonly used words, including animals, body parts, colors, and numbers. The layout and organization of the book are straightforward, with two-page spreads clearly labeled by categories such as "food and drink" or "clothes and accessories." Each vocabulary word is accompanied by a cheerful watercolor illustration and presented in English along with a romanized version of the Japanese to aid pronunciation, as well as the kanji and kana of the Japanese writing system. The book's introduction provides a handy, if somewhat complex, explanation of kanji and kana that an adult reader can simplify for a younger learner. Although some words featured in this book have a specific connection to Japanese culture ("tatami mat," "miso soup"), the author keeps a tight focus on vocabulary and does not expound on these cultural elements. The streamlined simplicity of this book feels appropriate for its intended audience of toddlers and preschoolers, while older readers seeking more cultural context might pair this title with My Japan by Etsuko Watanabe or All About Japan by Willamarie Moore.
