Marty has a personal reason for focusing on children learning language through reading. Marty's on didn't use language to express himself when he was young. Her son became interested in words as she put simple text to family photographs, binding them into books. Her son began to express himself as she presented the simple text and favorite photos.

Marty was encouraged to share her work publicly. Along with illustrator Judann Weichselbraun she produced Let's Play Ballfrom one of her original books. Marty believes in promoting a child's interest in language through reading.
