Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tina Chan
The children at the birthday party make crafts. The birthday girl folds Rudie, her origami dinosaur. When the children leave to hit the piñata, Rudie and the stick man fall from the table to the ground. Both come alive to teach readers the three main kinds of rocks, which are igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks form when lava cools and hardens. Crystals form as it cools. Basalt, granite, obsidian, diorite, and pumice are types of igneous rocks. Sedimentary rocks form when layers of chemicals or tiny rocks and sand build up. They stick together when water or earth hardens the layers into rocks. Shale, breccia, limestone, and sandstone are types of sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks are made when heat and pressure inside the earth cause rocks to melt together. Diamond, graphite, gneiss, marble, quartzite, and schist are types of metamorphic rocks. Before the birthday girl picks up Rudie and the stick man from the ground, the stick man brings an igneous rock inside the house to start a rock collection. A delightful story with color illustrations. Includes a glossary, further resources list, index, and instructions to make an origami T. Rex. Reviewer: Tina Chan; Ages 6 to 10.
