Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Young soccer enthusiast Luke kicks a ball inside his home. After Luke breaks his mother's vase and kicks his sister Lisa's toy rabbit, his parents sign him up for a youth soccer team. Although most players are friendly at his first practice, a dark haired boy named Nick intimidates Luke, who watches Nick skillfully maneuver a soccer ball with his feet and head. A girl teammate tells Luke that Nick is the team's outstanding player but moody. Luke practices dribbling a ball around cones. As Luke is preparing to kick a goal, Nick criticizes him, and Luke misses. He briefly loses confidence. The coach admires the strength of Luke's kicking, and Luke makes a goal during a practice game later that day. Nick admits Luke has potential but needs to learn rules. On another day, Luke and his family watch his team play a match against opponents. Nick congenially sits with them to provide commentary instead of playing. Depictions of novice player Luke excelling so quickly seem contrived. Illustrations mostly portray boy athletes. Small images of toy animals demonstrate soccer movements, referee signals, and gear but have no accompanying explanations. A game printed inside the book is based on chance, not incorporating the story or any soccer elements. Readers might prefer Michael Foreman's Wonder Goal! (2003).
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-This slight story is about a child's first soccer practice. Because Luke is always kicking either a ball or his sister's stuffed animals around the house, his parents decide that it is time for him to join a soccer team. He has a lot to learn but, amazingly, he scores a goal during the practice match, earning the admiration of his new teammates. At the conclusion of the story, the coach invites the team to watch a real soccer game where Luke's family encourages Nick, the best player on the team, to sit with them in the bleachers. Illustrations are animated and colorful. Side sketches add humor by showing a kangaroo and a rabbit demonstrating various skills such as the bicycle kick, push-pass, and header. Related terms, such as "substitution bench" and "playing field," are noted in a spread, along with superfluous illustrations labeled "back of a soccer jersey" and "front of a soccer jersey" as well as "notebook," "pen," and "whistle." A board game is appended. Pass on this title for one with more substance about a beginner learning the game.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
