Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Writing is one of the first activities that kids consciously master that separates them from babies. The ornate and decorate nature of writing is always a fascination. First introduced is the trick of using a rubber band to attach two pencils together to create zigzags and patterns. This use of double pencils continues for making a sign for a room, as well as developing skills for Gothic lettering. First practice with two pencils, but then graduate to a calligraphy pen. The various projects include place cards, invitations, awards, specialty lettering and a newsletter. Well illustrated, there are numerous samples of type styles to copy. The grand finale is "versals," those large initial letter used to begin verses in the Bible.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8Lewis offers numerous ideas that are not readily found in craft books for this audience. In describing calligraphy and gothic lettering, she discusses the types of pens to purchase, how to determine pen size, and how to use them. The author also offers project ideas that use calligraphy. The explanation for making computer newsletters is cursory, but offers a good introduction to variations in typefaces. Versal letters, 3-D letters, and matching lettering style to the project such as using jagged lettering for a report on electricity will spark the imagination of young artists. A welcome purchase despite the British spelling of certain words such as "colour" and "practise."Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
