Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Carroll Roberts
Like the other books in this "How to Write" series, this book contains a wealth of information—so much information, in fact, that many young readers will have a difficult time determining which bits of information are crucial and which are merely enhancements or fine tuning. Also like the other books in this series, the design elements completely overpower the content, making it all the more difficult for young readers to understand. Each page is designed to look as if snippets of letters and postcards, Post-It notes and notebook paper are pinned or stuck to the page, all in different colors, placed at different angles, and printed in different typefaces. One two-page spread has eighteen separate sidebars in ten colors with borders, drop-shadows and arrows pointing every which way. It is a visual extravaganza that will overwhelm and confuse all but the most focused, dedicated student. Back matter includes an index, a glossary, and notes for parents and teachers. Parents and teachers would probably be better served, however, to find a different book. Reviewer: Barbara Carroll Roberts
