Overview

Dobbins (religion and East Asian studies, Oberlin College) compares "high doctrine to lived religion" in his treatment of the letters of Eshinni, Shin Buddhist nun and wife of the Pure Land Buddhism school's founder, Shinran. As he does so, he finds the real lives of medieval Buddhist nuns to be quite different from what many had thought. Dobbins annotates his complete translation of the letters, describes the Pure Land movement and the Shin school in particular, and sets to rights the misunderstandings and perhaps wishful thinking of scholars about the Pure Land movement and the women involved in it.
