Overview

Dear Sam,
As your only living grandfather, I want to welcome you into this world. Always remember that ... life is a gift and a blessing.
In the tradition of such bestsellers as Tuesdays with Morrie and Riding the Bus with My Sister, this emotionally powerful collection of letters from grandfather to grandson will touch readers right down to their core. Award-winning radio host, newspaper columnist, and psychologist Daniel Gottlieb has created a truly inspirational work. When his grandson was born, Daniel Gottlieb began to write a series of heartfelt letters that he hoped Sam would read later in life. He planned to cover all the important topics -- dealing with your parents, handling bullies, falling in love, coping with death -- and what motivated him was the fear that he might not live long enough to see Sam reach adulthood. You see, Daniel Gottlieb is a quadriplegic -- the result of a near-fatal automobile accident that occurred two decades ago -- and he knows enough not to take anything for granted. Then, when Sam was only fourteen months old, he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disability, a form of autism, and suddenly everything changed. Now the grandfather and grandson were bound by something more: a disability -- and Daniel Gottlieb's special understanding of what that means became invaluable.A lovingly written, emotionally gripping book that offers unique -- and universal -- insights into what it means to be human. In addition to his thriving psychotherapy practice, Daniel Gottlieb serves as the host of Voices in the Family, an award-winning mental health call-in show on Philadelphia's much-respected public radio station, WHYY. He also writes a bimonthly column for the Philadelphia Inquirer entitled "On Healing," and is the author of two books. He lectures locally and nationally on a variety of topics affecting the well-being of people, families, and the larger community.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
"Dear Sam," the first letter began, "As your only living grandfather, I wanted to welcome you into this world. Always remember that...life is a gift and a blessing." Daniel Gottlieb started his one-way correspondence with his infant grandson partly because as a quadriplegic with health problems, he feared that he might not survive to see Sam reach adulthood. But only 14 months after his first note, grandfather Dan received terrible news: Little Sam had been diagnosed with pervasive developmental disability, a form of autism. At that moment, the letters took on a new meaning and urgency.

    Poignant, Touching Tome!

I received this book at a HEC (Handicapped Encounter Christ) retreat in 2006. I have read it twice since. The author has quadrapelgia, following a motor vehicle accident. Dan Gotleib's letters to his grandson who has Pervasive Developmental Disorder, will move the reader to tears.

A Must for any Family !

I read Letters to Sam, and was so moved that I went out and bought more to give to family and friends. I wish evreyone could read these letters and feel the things that I did. It touched me in a very personal way, because he could have been talking to me, not his grandson. Everyone from new parents to old hands at parenting, could take something away from this book. Read the book and then see if you don't feel like going out and buying the book for someone you know. Letters to Sam has the lessons that everyone can use in their lives. How to have compassion, love, and understanding for everyone around us. Please read this book and take something away from it like I did.

    New Orleans fundraiser

What a find! I purchased this book at a fund raiser and I received much more than the water damaged UU church. This book is packed with lessons on living told with striking vulnerability and wisdom. It is a concentrated dose of Dad¿s radio show but he is the guest and interviewer. You don't need to be a listener to be uplifted and transformed by, 'Letters to Sam.'

Amazing and touching, a book for all!

This is one of the most touching and profound books that I have ever read. I saw a clip about this family on CNN and went out to get the book. This man and this family are amazing. I am not disabled nor do I know anyone autistic, but I will wholeheartedly recommend this book. I loved it! I was truly touched!

Letters to Sam is a Grand Slam

I just finished reading the book with my son. I started reading it a few days ago and my 10 year saw the effect it was having on me and asked to read it with me. It is inspiring and causes much reflection. If you have any interest in putting your life in perspective please read this book. I hope someday I get to meet 'Sam'.

A New Part of Who I Am

I never thought I could begin to actually love people in a book besides perhaps a romantic hero. But I love Pop and Sam. They are a part of who I am now - After reading this book I will never forget them.
