More About This Book

Overview

WINNER of the Living Now Bronze Medal for "Books for a Better Tomorrow" - WINNER of the Nautilus Awards Silver Medal for "Books That Are Changing the World" - LETTERS TO SURVIVORS has been chosen by counseling programs and women's centers across America as their first-recommended book for survivors of rape and sexual abuse. What if you really aren't alone? What if you knew there is hope that things can get better? What if you could connect with other amazing women who have been through it too, and could share their hopes, advice, wit, and wisdom with you? LETTERS TO SURVIVORS offers you that. Women from around the world, from teen to adult, have gathered to give you their personal message of hope after rape. That makes LETTERS TO SURVIVORS one of the most uplifting, life-changing books you may ever read. Every letter is presented as a work of full-color art, alongside the printed text of each letter for ease of reading. Each woman's letter addresses a different aspect of recovery from rape, such as recovering trust, coping with depression and suicidal thoughts, self-injury, spirituality/God, how to find support, how to recognize toxic so-called "helpers," how to work effectively with your therapist, how to handle discouragement, and how to find hope again. Nothing in the book is "triggering"--there is no harsh language or dark imagery. "Letters To Survivors" can be read by a person at any stage of healing, and there is no other book like it.

An Inspirational, Honest and Beautiful Book for Survivors of Sexual Assault. Honesty, inspiration and hope written by survivors for survivors!! A must read!!

This book is both beautiful and inspirational. It is hard to imagine that a book dealing with sexual assault can be so artful, beautiful and inspirational on a topic that is so ugly and is one of the most horrific crimes to the mind, body and soul. Matt Atkinson had a vision that survivors writing letters to other survivors would be hopeful, inspirational, and honest about the healing journey. These women show immense courage in writing about the arduous healing journey while showing incredible hope, inspiration and love to the survivors who will be reading their letters. There are many clinical books about the healing process written by therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists. These books have their place. However, there is NO book like this available to survivors. These very acts produce shame and isolation. The words in this book are words that I could have written myself. This book no longer makes me feel crazy or alone. The bravery of the women in this book are inspirational. This book is a MUST read for any survivor of sexual assault. You will see your own words contained in the many, many letters. You will no longer feel like the only one out there. You can feel the love and respect that your fellow survivors have for you. Matt Atkinson has accomplished his vision and so much more. This book will help and save thousands of survivors.

A beautiful book full of hope and inspiration

I can't tell you exactly what you will get from reading this book but having read it a few times now I know your experience will be different every time. It will make you laugh, cry and feel an overwhelming sense of connection to the women who have bravely shared a piece of themselves for the book; for you.

For the survivor.. This book, unassuming as it looks, will become something very important to you. The letters contained in this book provide an honest outlook on what recovering from rape is like. They provide comfort and hope; no survivor is too broken or damaged to recover.

When I read these women's words I felt so relieved to have found someone who understood what I felt; my fears, my shames. Each letter projects a sense of love that wrapped itself around my heart. Never forget that you are not alone and that there are many others just like yourself, trying to take back what they lost after being raped.

The book is directed at survivors of rape but I think anyone who works with or supports a survivor will also gain some valuable insight and hope from reading these letters.

If you do only one thing today, make it buying this book. Buy it for yourself, your partner, your friend or family member.

    I Also Recommend:

Wonderfully written Book--a Rape/Abuse Survivor must have

This book is filled with poignant letters written to survivors of rape/sexual assault/abuse by Survivors themselves. Who better to give advice and assurance of the many things you will feel during the process of healing, than people who have lived through it themselves.

It is one of those books that is so moving, you can't put it down. Letters To Survivors leaves a profound mark on your heart as you read from real life survivors that you are not alone!

I wish this book had been out years ago! I applaud the compilation, Author, and Women who filled these pages with their deepest love and words of wisdom and strength.

You must check it out. You will NOT be dissappointed..

    A gift to survivors...from survivors!

In this life, promises would be cherished, if they could be counted on. Finally, a book filled with "promises" you CAN count on. If you are a victim of sexual trauma - rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse...this book is most definitely for you. It would be unfair for me to say this if I were unable to back it up, but, I can. You see, not only do I own the book, have read it from cover to cover numerous times, but, I am one of the survivors whose letter is included in the book. I want you to know because, I want you to know these words did not come easily. They are not "pat answers" to guide you through therapy...or to help you avoid seeking therapy. No, these words are hard pressed, genuine, hopeful...and honest. None of us tells you it is easy - we tell you it can be done. None of us tells you there are patterned steps to follow - they don't exist. But, each of us tells you we have been there, hiding, hurting, crying, angry, suicidal, self-injurious...we HAVE been right where you are. In my letter, I mention that there are those who have been there, who can tell you where best to step, and where not to stay, on this journey to wholeness. It is true. That is why I read this book, over and over. Those who have written these letters, struggled to do so, and in the struggle, truth was penned...truth I need...truth you need -- truth. Bless you for seeking to find solace and comfort. It can be found, and once YOU have found it, reach back, because someone else is waiting for YOUR truth. This book is filled with truth. Not rosey words that will leave you flat and angry when they don't turn out for you...but honest words, that promise bad times will come again, but each time they do, you find yourself a little better equipped to manage. Bless you as you read.
