January 1

Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17

What lies ahead of us this new year in our recovery? Onething is certain — we are never finished. There is alwaysanother step to take or a fresh opportunity towork the stepsagain. An unknown writer has captured this reality well:

We only see a little of the ocean,
A few miles' distance from the rocky shore;
But oh! out there beyond — beyond the wave's horizon
There's more — there's more.

The "more" that is ahead is God. Like the prow of a ship cutting through the uncharted waves, God in Christ is in front; he is our future. He is in all our tomorrows, in all our new beginnings. Although we may fear what lies ahead, we need not be full of dread. God is there already, and everything the future can bring us will have to meet him first before it reaches us. Whatever is in store for us, our Higher Power, Jesus Christ, will be our constant companion and ever-present friend and savior. He is our "more:" and he is never finished with us. May we begin and finish each day of the year with him. Today is set aside by the church as the feast of the "Holy Name of Jesus:" May every day be his this year.

Holy Jesus, in your name and with your help, each day there is always more of your holy love and life. Amen.
