—from Level 4 Virus Hunters of the CDC

In their book, Level 4 Virus Hunters of the CDC, husband-wife team Dr. Joseph B. McCormick and Dr. Susan Fisher-Hoch invite you to join them in their search for those who may be infected by these lethal viruses. You will travel through equatorial Africa, the ghettos and rainforests of Brazil, and through settlements in northern Pakistan-all in the search of these killer viruses. Both Dr. McCormick and Dr. Fisher-Hoch will offer their scientific knowledge about how and why these viruses are so lethal to humans and what can be done to prevent any kind of devastating epidemic from ever breaking out. Though unsettling, Level 4 Virus Hunters of the CDC is truly a read that will keep you aware of the power of Mother Nature.

CDC doctors travel to remote areas (with little medical facilities) in the world to trace/combat Level 4 virus outbreaks there.

This would make a great film, it is a cross between an explorer book with medical science horror. CDC doctors (later a husband/wife team that wrote the book), travel to mainly remote areas of the world to trace/combat Level 4 viruses (the worst types of viruses such as Ebola, Lassa). They do this 24/7 for many years. The CDC doctors go where no one wants to go, and where planes do not want to land, and, where there are little or no medical facilities. There is much in ths book including them mentioning the abuse of lab monkeys, such as one survived a Level 4 virus injection, but was later euthanized--even without a lab test to see why the monkey was immune. The travels and the different Level 4 virus outbreaks makes this quite interesting. There is not much discussion of the beautiful tropical skies, and their conclusions may not be agreeable to most, but you can read where they came from. Some of the scenario is in the USA also. There is a lot of coverage material, and the background of the scientists in this book. It is well written.

    Great REAL LIFE account

When it comes to movies such as Outbreak, or books such as the Hot Zone, the word FICTION plays with the mind and opinion of the reader. On the other hand, this book is an outstanding, real life perspective of an expert in the field of epidemiological intelligence and virology. He lived it, he brings the reader close to REAL HOT ZONES. Perhaps this book does not provoke the suspense of Outbreak or the Hot Zone, but it actually brought me closer to the experience of dangerous outbreaks and the research involved. A must for medical students interested in public service.

    Excellent Book

Why read fiction when you can read a true story written by the person that lived it? I honestly did not want to put this book down. That's a first for me when it comes to a nonfiction book. Virus Hunters would be a good book for the scientist and layman alike.

    zzzzzz....

Ok, I bought this book because I am a huge fan of the genre. To me, nothing is more exciting than reading about hunting deadly viruses (except maybe actually being in the presence of a deadly level 4 virus). I read the first 80 pages of this book and put it down where it still sits. I was absolutely bored out of my mind. Not that I couldve written a better book on the topic, but I was expecting a little more 'Preston' excitement in this book. Maybe one of these days when I cant afford to buy another book, I'll pick it back up.

    A must for virologists

If you've ever wanted to work with deadly diseases on the battle lines of microbiology, you must read this book. It covers it all, from life in Subsaharan Africa to the swiftness of level 4 diseases. Will keep you riveted until the end!

The unknown side of disease research

Not only does this book bring us to lands that most of us will never see, it also points out the obstacles and hardships that the scientists themselves face. In the end, it reminds us that the goal of science isn't just to find the answers, but to help stop the suffering. It made me remember why I went into the scientific research field.

level d: mind concept of humans

The human mind is a complex, entity of sick deminted visions; That takes over the mind of even the humbles of people an it cripples your self control an morality in which you base your life principlies, it's a place were men alike have fall victim to it's evil intension an slain to a point were it is hopeless to keep on fighting. To remain in controll of the mind , that seems to laugh every time you try to gain one inch controll over it !?

    a reviewer

I have wanted to be an epidemiologist for the longest time and this book really exposed me to the truth about working with deadly diseases. The vivid details shocked me. I never had any idea that conditions are so bad in some of those poverty stricken countries. Now i can't wait until i finally do become an epidemiologist so i can help find vaccines for these horrible diseases like ebola, lassa fever, and green monkey disease. (also known as Marburg disease)
