Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
When a school in China was buried by rubble from an earthquake, many students were injured or died. But the quake caused much more damage than just to the school. At least 69,000 people were killed. The true account of the school's collapse makes for an attention-grabbing opening. Three excellent maps showing where in the world this quake occurred, where the earth's tectonic plates are, and the Ring of Fire where volcanoes are located add to the book's appeal. Two-page spreads cover many earthquake topics including how quakes are measured, when another "big one" will happen, and what can be learned from earthquakes. Short sentences accompanied by well-captioned photos work together to make this an interesting read for youngsters from second to seventh grade. The grade three reading level lets many readers tackle this book successfully. It is well suited for use with classroom science or social studies units, but readers will also pick it up on their own. Fact boxes add to the information and end pages offer appeal while telling about famous earthquakes and earthquake safety. New words are introduced in bold and defined in the end glossary. Other resources and a comprehensive index round out the book form the "Disaster Survivors" series. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
