Overview

You must be ready to join Leven Thumps, Clover Ernest, and Winter Frore as they journey across Foo to free Geth from his existence as a toothpick and restore him as the rightful heir to the throne. It won't be easy. Foo is in chaos, and Leven must overcome several adversaries and survive the Swollen Forest to save his friends and keep hope alive. As fate would have it, bad goes to worse when Leven digs up a buried secret — one that stalks him, determined to whisper a truth that could be deadly in the wrong hands. Will Leven master control of his power, or will Foo crumble under a dark, new enemy?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The delicious madness that began in Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo starts anew in this runaway fun park ride of a novel. As usual, this Obert Skye adventure defies svelte synopsis. Suffice it to say that Leven and his cohorts are obliged to journey across Foo to reconstitute Geth, who presently looks like a toothpick. But with chaos reigning everywhere, even that simple transformation seems impossible.
Publishers Weekly
Originally published by Shadow Mountain in Salt Lake City, Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo by Obert Skye, illus. by Ben Sowards, is now being distributed in hardcover by Simon & Schuster, which is publishing this title as an Aladdin paperback . This YA fantasy about an Oklahoma orphan who finds the secret gateway to Foo, a mythical land where it is possible for humans to hope, dream and imagine, has already sold more than 60,000 copies in hardcover. The second title in the planned five-book series, Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret, will release in October. See Children's Bookshelf, June 1, for the complete story. Children's Literature
Leven Thumps and his friends from the land of Foo are back for yet another adventure! Although Geth is turned into a toothpick and ends up in reality, Leven, Winder, and Clover must survive the dangers of Foo, which is still reeling from Sabine’s evil reign. As Geth tries to survive as a toothpick (not so easy when Sabine finds his way into reality as well and starts to gather allies), the other friends are separated and forced to navigate many dangers. The land of Foo is a bit too crowded with fantastic places and beings, so readers can tend to get rather lost, especially if they neglect the glossary of characters. Geth’s adventures in reality are more entertaining, but overall the book seems swollen with too much fantasy. Still, it is packed with adventure and fans of the first book will enjoy this new volume. Gr 5–8
Fourteen-year-old Leven Thumps and his not-so-merry band of Foo denizens return. Things start going badly right from the start. Homes are destroyed, people are buried in dirt or encased in ice, planes almost crash, and poor Geth, once a powerful and respected person, is turned into a toothpick and swallowed. The characters aren't compelling, and the most interesting parts of the story take place in Reality and not in Foo at all. The "Whispered Secret" is somewhat of a letdown. The ending sets the stage for yet another outing. Fans of Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo (Shadow Mountain, 2005) might be able to make heads or tails of the story, but everyone else will be totally lost.

Kirkus Reviews
In a severe case of middle-volume-itis, plot lines proliferate, the pace slows and the tale is left in mid-flight in this follow-up to the better-than-it-looked Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo (2005). Here, young Leven and his companions are repeatedly separated and reunited as they struggle to make their way across the dream-driven realm of Foo to restore Geth, its rightful ruler (but currently imprisoned in a much-used toothpick), to his former glory. Back in reality, coagulated globs of the exploded arch-villain Sabine gain human allies to rebuild the gateway that will leave both worlds vulnerable to conquest. As before, Skye displays a dab hand at crafting both baroque metaphors and uniquely grotesque menaces; he also blends in clever details (from Leven chewing on a "Pigment-o" to disguise his coloration, for instance, to a humble garbage collector with children named Darcy and Rochester), though more thinly than in the previous episode. Despite extensive closing notes, readers unfamiliar with that first outing are likely to flounder, but Skye's world-building is inventive enough to carry the tale at least a little farther. Frequent full-page illustrations not seen. (Fantasy. 11-13)

    Creative, Inventive, & Inspiring!

I read my ten-year-old daughter's books along with her so that we can share some interactive conversation time in the evenings. As with the first book in the series, my daughter whipped through The Whispered Secret at record speed. During our discussions, I was lucky enough to be able to answer such musings as, "Mom, if 'onicks' were real, could we have one as a pet - I promise I'd share!" and "Do you think they have classes for how to use a 'kilve', you know, like a martial arts or something? 'Cuz Winter does it, and that would be cool to do it, too!" and then, of course, "If I invented Clover's 'Pigment-o gum' here, I'd be super-famous - don't ya think, Mom?" These creative exchanges with my daughter made me realize how much I, myself, was actually enjoying the story, and left me eager to read further to see what other inspired dialogue might arise!

    I Also Recommend:

Even Better than the First One!

"Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret," by Obert Skye is the action-packed sequel to the acclaimed "Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo" and is book two in the best-selling "Leven Thumps" series. Filled with suspense, mystery, and humor, this series is one which would be a pity for any adventure reader to miss out on! With unique characters, wonderful scenes, and non-stop action, "Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret" is an unFoogettable book in which the author perfectly describes each person and scene, constantly giving the reader a colorful, detailed picture in their mind. Fast-moving and entertaining, this book is impossible to put down and has the reader always thinking about it and excitedly wondering what will happen next! Book two is even better and more action-packed than the first one and leaves the reader extremely excited and looking forward to reading the next edition in this amazing, one-of-a-kind series!

    Tantilizing!

I couldn't put it down. The dream world of Foo and its inhabitants are so fascinating. It is strange, but fun to have a talking toothpick as one of the main characters.

I don't agree with 'not impressed'

Sorry, 'not impressed', but I have read the Twilight books. I seriously think that the Leven Thumps books should be given more credit than that. The Twilight series is about vampires who do not drink human blood...whats so good about that? Plus that dumb human girl falls in love with one of those vampires... Sorry again, I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU!!!!

    A lover of good books

When I first read the first Leven book, I finished it in just two days. That is really saying something since I have hours and hours of school to do. When I read this book, i was blown away. Now, I can't wait to get # 3 in the series.

    What an Ending!

I was impressed about it all, but long for more of the reality side like others. On the other side though, how Obert Skye threw in plot twist and detail was beyond my expectation. All though, it left me on the biggest cliff hanger of my life, I think I can survive another year for the next one.

Lots of work to transfer to ipod...

FYI on the unabridged version - the track information on the discs is not available - most come up as simply the track number with no additional information. You'll need to do some manual entry to get this nicely entered into your iTunes library. Haven't listened to the entire book yet, but I'm looking forward to it - we loved the first one.
