Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Mulcahy
Part of the "Graphic Library" series, this book tells the life story of Levi Strauss and the development of his business—Levi Jeans. The author sets the historical context of this story by first introducing readers to the Californian gold rush, its effect on the country's economy and on people's lifestyles. Following this readers begin to learn about Levi Strauss, his creativity, and his business ability. Being a graphic novel it tells the story by combining graphics with text, which makes the reading engaging and enjoyable. In a classroom it would be a great addition to a classroom library. The book could also serve as an informational text allowing teachers to introduce students to nonfiction reading strategies. The book includes a table of contents, a glossary, information about where to find more resources about Levi Strauss and blue jeans, a bibliography, and an index. The illustrations are vibrant and complement the text. As with other novels in this series the use of color in the illustrations adds life to the images being represented.
