Library Journal
Gale is a historian who leads a study group that spent five years reading and studying the journals of American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. This is her exhaustive guide to Lewis and Clark historical sites. Intended for car travel, it is divided into ten regions, including the Washington, DC, Virginia, and Philadelphia areas, where President Thomas Jefferson first planted the seeds of the expedition. It then follows the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the St. Louis area, where the Corps of Discovery embarked on its voyage along the Missouri and Columbia rivers to the Northwest Pacific Coast. Coverage of each region is made up of photos, descriptions, maps, and detailed driving directions to more than 800 destinations. Most of the sites relate directly to Lewis and Clark, Native Americans, and western expansion. Gale also includes other significant historical, cultural, and recreational sites, as well as a table with directions to all 573 Lewis and Clark campsites. The fever for the Lewis and Clark bicentennial may be waning, but this outstanding guidebook is necessary for any traveler interested in following all or just a section of the 8000-mile Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804. For all travel collections. Joel Jones, Kansas City P.L., MO Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
