Lexie on Her Own

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-5-- Lexie feels that fifth grade is the worst. Her best friend has moved away; her other friends are acting weird; and snobby newcomer, Tara, has invited everyone except her to a holiday party. Things are tough at home, too. Lexie's mother is deep into her master's thesis and has little time for the family, and her father wants her to go out into the cold to watch birds with him. Her older sister is never any fun to be with, and her older brother is always working when he's not in school. The only friend she has left is Fido, her cat. Having already borrowed months ahead on her allowance, Lexie is still broke and Christmas is right around the corner. Just as things are at their bleakest, they begin to work themselves out. Lexie also shows that she is gaining some maturity, and she begins to take responsibility voluntarily. Eisenberg has drawn real characters with typical worries and cares; readers will laugh along and empathize with the likable protagonist. --Nancy P.
