Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The construction of a house over an Aztec pyramid in the 15th century unleashes horrific consequences for future generations in this tale by the author of Como agua para chocolate. It is Mexico City in the year 2200. Interplanetary travel is common; the candidate for world president has been assassinated; and people are at the mercy of a high-tech, bureaucratic society. Individuals spend several reincarnated lives atoning for misdeeds of a previous self before they are permitted to live satisfying lives by meeting their soulmates. The new candidate for world president is waging a campaign of terror. Azucena, an astroanalyst, flies to another planet to find her soulmate, Rodrigo, before they are both captured and killed. Though the book includes illustrations of dreamy altered mind states and a CD with an eclectic music selection, both seem unnecessary. Esquivel's imaginative but depressing view of the future is entertaining Recommended for public libraries.-Rafael M. Gonzalez
