Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elisabeth Greenberg
Where David Mortimore Baxter goes, lies are told—and soon he is in deep trouble. His neighbor Mr. McCafferty says, "That boy lies so much. I think it might be a medical condition." David himself swears, "I'm never, ever going to do it again. But I really mean it. I don't have any fingers, eyes, or toes crossed." However, David gives in to his failing, which his mother calls "bending the truth," and soon he has told everyone that Smashing Smorgan from the TV show Wicked Wrestling Mania will be at his house for lunch. When his entire class shows up on Saturday in his front yard, he digs himself deeper into his lie by promising tickets to a taping of Wicked Wrestling Mania to his whole class. Meanwhile, he is trying to convince his nemesis Rose, who does not believe a word he says, that yes, everyone is going to get a ticket. Just a few struggles with the truth later, David and his entire class are waiting in line for a sold-out taping of the show. David can either finally ‘fess up or figure out a way to get tickets. He stumbles into Smorgan's dressing room, explains his dilemma, and is told, "You are in big trouble!" Smorgan graciously walks out to the class, promises everyone free tickets, assigns David to cleaning his dressing room on the day of the taping, and then comes to lunch at David's house, making him the envy of the entire class as well as the girl Rose. Has David learned a lesson? Has the reader? Time will tell. Meanwhile, David with his penchant for trouble will certainly resonate with the target reader group.

Karen lives in Australia with her husband, two children, two cats, and one dog.

Brann Garvey lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, Keegan, their dog, Lola, and their very fat cat, Iggy. Brann graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of fine arts degree.
