Overview

Liberation Psychology carries forward the tradition of Abraham Maslow and Martin Seligman in advancing the ideas of self-actualization and positive psychology.

We will realize our human potential only by acquiring and mastering the technologies available for managing both the automatic inclinations of our native minds and our habits of dealing with the human environment.

The Automatic Mind, however, is a big horse, and the Self a small rider. As riders, we face a simple choice. We will either learn how to ride, or we will be dragged wherever that horse is spooked into going. There is no third option. This book is intended as a riding manual of sorts, a training manual in the skills of mind management.

The technologies described here have been constructed from the following sources:
- Evolutionary and developmental biology
- Cognitive neuroscience
- Psychology - in its research and its clinical applications
- Greco-Roman moral philosophy,
- Thirty years spent providing counseling, psychological assessment and management development training
- That naturalistic observation and cultivated inference upon which we all rely.

You will find the book to:
- Focus on manifestly important issues
- Present ideas that are interesting, novel and useful
- Be seasoned with irony and wit, as in banter between Reader and Author
- Be enlivened by apt and entertaining cartoons
- Occasionally be a wee bit demanding – because it articulates a set of new concepts
- Call up in you ideals you cherish and long to join with others in championing.

As you read through the book I believe you will find it to be true that it offers

IDEAS YOUR MIND WILL USE

About the Author

I graduated magna cum laude from St. Louis University, completed a Master’s Degree in philosophy there, and a Ph.D. from the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan.

In addition to having taught philosophy and psychology at the university level, I have decades of professional experience counseling men and women both in their personal lives and in the execution of their professional and managerial roles. For a decade I was also a management development consultant to a Fortune 100 company. I have provided feedback to, and dealt with the blind spots and resistance of, some few thousand individuals, toward promoting skills of mind management and personal development – the themes of this book.

Like many a man, reveries of a fulfilled life have had me as an explorer in the mold of Alexander von Humboldt or Richard Evans Schultes. Having suffered the dire internal havoc commonly visited upon travelers to foreign lands, however, I realized that following their example, rather than enriching my life, would end it. Hence the recourse to meanings, which rarely occasion anything worse than consternation, and can be fulfilling even when they concern the more vexing aspects of our existence.

Travels have nevertheless included touring Tasmania and the Australian Outback solo, its northeast mountains and coast by motorcycle, scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef, as well as visits to the Galapagos, and to the Amazon rainforest thrice. (You must go!)

I am an artist manqué, having dabbled again and again, when I should have been in harness toward a properly cultivated artistic potential. I have contributed to the parenting of two step-daughters who are now women in full and important parts of my life.

I’ve devoted my intellectual life and most of my career toward understanding what causes us to think and act as we do, and what sort of developmental initiatives enable us to mature healthily in the first place or get ourselves over into more rational, integrated and adaptive functioning.

This book sets forth the results of that lifelong search. I hope you will take it is an invitation to you to participate in a collaborative – an actualization collaborative - toward refining and putting to the test the tools and skills of mind that I outline here.
