Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan
Nine-year-old Liberty Porter is excited about the being First Daughter of the United States of America, but she is also afraid she is going to fail the job. She does not want to let the rest of the children in her country down since she is supposed to represent them to the world. She has studied up on the duties of the president and the history of children in the White House and hopes she can measure up. After the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, Liberty enjoys the parade, but she also wants to explore her new home with her dog Franklin. Soon enough she is set to explore, much to the consternation of Ms. Crum, her dad's Chief of Staff. But Liberty charms one and all with her antics and makes friends with a boy whose mother works for the president. There is lots of history mentioned in this book, plus facts about the White House and its occupants. The story is told with lots of humor and energy. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—It's nine-year-old Liberty Porter's first official day at the White House. Her dad is being inaugurated as President of the United States and she is beyond excited. She wants to be the best First Daughter ever. It doesn't take long, however, before she gets in trouble with the chief of staff as she blurts out answers to questions at a press conference and disguises herself as a tour guide. Because her intentions are good—she wants to help others and make the White House a welcoming place for everyone—she is forgiven by her parents and embraced in a "family hug." Sometimes a little over-the-top in its effort to be cute and kidlike, the book does hit the mark for how a youngster might approach some of the overwhelming elements of living in the White House. Though sometimes misguided, Liberty is an engaging character whose heart is in the right place. She also knows a lot of interesting presidential facts, which she spouts throughout the book. Classy illustrations depict the child, her parents, and pets. With interest high because of the Obama First Daughters, this chapter book will appeal to many children, including reluctant readers.—Tina Martin, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, IL

    A Delightful Read

I picked up a copy of this book since my daughters have read several other books by Julia DeVillers and enjoyed them very much. While I would say most of her other books are geared for the late tween/teen age, this one is clearly geared for the early tween years. It's written from the perspective of a 9 year old girl who's dad has just become President. The book follows Liberty through inauguration day where she does lots of typical kid like things (getting antsy waiting for speeches, being very excited about having certain priviledges from living in the White House, and wanting to prove herself worthy of being the President's daughter, to name a few). It has some really cute supporting characters including her secret service agent SAM, and a whole host of kids she buddies up with when she joins their White House tour. There is even the grumpy staff person who she has to win over with her cuteness.

I love that the way it's written....it really does seem like it's in the vernacular of a 9 year old child. One of my favorite sayings is when she talks about her dad "oathing the office" as he becomes President. And she uses made up words with -tastic tagged to the end of them, her favorite being pres-tastic! There is also some great trivia about some of the past president's kids.

I would definitely reccommend getting this book, it's adora-tastic and deligh-tastic all in one!

This book is great and its really interesting. You can learn a lot from it. It is intended for 3rd-5th graders, but children and young adults of all ages will find themselves not wanting to put the book down. When i read the book, i loved it so much that i would read at night when i was supposed to be asleep. Now that its availible in an ebook version, i am even more thrilled to be able to download such an amazingly written book onto my great nook. This author chose her words well in "Liberty Porter, First Daughter". If you buy this book, i assure you, you won't be dissapointed!!!!!!

    The best

This was one of the best books I have ever read. I wonder what the people living there before her? Will the readers ever get to meet the vice p and his/her family? But I know that this is better to read as a book than on my nook!
