Meet the Author

Mike Thaler was born in Los Angeles in 1936. After moving to New York City, he started his professional career drawing cartoons for adults in 1960. A children's book editor saw one of these cartoons and encouraged Mike to write for children. He is an award-winning author and illustrator and has been called “one of the most creative people in children’s literature.” Mike currently lives in Canby, Oregon.

Jared Lee has illustrated more than 100 books for young readers. The Librarian from the Black Lagoon I read the story the Librarian from the Black Lagoon. It was about a new librarian at a boy’s school and he thinks she is a monster.  His friends say if you talk in the library the librarian will laminate you.  When you go to the library you cannot get books because she bolts them to the shelf.  The librarian has an assistant named Igor. I like the story the Librarian from the Black Lagoon because it was funny when the librarian laminated someone.  I also liked it because it was scary when you get electrocuted when you touch the bookshelf.  The characters act so dramatic.  I like the story because the librarian is pink and has a monster mouth.

This book lends itself well to inference, expecially. getting the students to infer the ending based only on what they know from details of the story.

I have read this book to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They all have enjoyed it -- and we love to compare me to Mrs. Beamster. We have fun comparing our library to the one in the Black Lagoon. The only problem with the book is the illustration of the Dewey Decimal System. Ask a real librarian
