Overview

During these tough economic times, more people are relying on libraries than ever before, even as library funding is being slashed or eliminated altogether. The hard truth is that many seasoned librarians are losing their jobs, and many recent LIS graduates are having a hard time finding one. Being unemployed is potentially devastating; without a clear, well-thought out game plan and considerable attention to their own personal well-being, those affected may find it difficult to recover. In this ALA Editions Special Report, Woodward, a veteran librarian with decades of experience, helps at-risk librarians

• Prepare for budget crunches by showing them how to develop versatile skills and plan ahead for potential changes in employment

• Educate themselves about which library positions are being phased out and which will hold steady or expand

• Adjust their career goals, repurpose their existing skills for non-traditional librarianship, and even search for work in non-library settings This Special Report provides the compassionate guidance and pragmatic support that librarians will need to survive possible career crises and reenter the job market with renewed confidence.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Shanna Smith
For better or worse, libraries are always changing. In recent years, a majority of the change has come in the form of budget cuts and reduced staffing. Libraries are forced to do more with less, which means that employees have to be more efficient and, to a certain extent, more competitive. This special report provides librarians with information for understanding and navigating the job market. It describes prospects, lists precautions for current job holders, and advises librarians on the presentation and skills needed for a successful interview. These subjects, however, are only briefly described, and much of the information is common sense. For instance, Woodward discusses the need to own a personal computer for the job application process and later describes appropriate attire for an interviewing applicant. In an effort to be thorough, this report glosses over many important issues. While some librarians may find value in this report, a large percentage of professionals will be offended by the author's advice, especially the appearance of job seekers in regard to weight, age, and dress, which is described in great length and will make readers uncomfortable. Additionally, the nature of the report's information may feel like the author calls into question a librarian's intelligence. Job seekers would be better served by reading the multitude of articles found in professional library journals, which provide a more diverse outlook on the library job market. Reviewer: Shanna Smith
