Jennifer Pena hits the big time

Since releasing her first album in 1996, Jennifer Pena has been steadily building a base of loyal fans. She released four albums on the EMI Latin label, and recorded the vocal tracks for the young Selena in the movie about the murdered singer's life. Still, Pena was not very well promoted by EMI Latin (it is probably for this reason that EMI is losing all of its biggest stars to other labels). Once her contract ended with EMI, she signed with breakout label Univision Music Group, and now has received all the promotion she could ask for. The results: a platinum-selling album and a song that was #1 on the Billboard Latin chart for nine weeks. This album is worthy of the promotion. From start to finish, it is a feast for the ears. I was skeptical when I first saw it. She had changed her looks, and it seemed that she was leaving behind her roots to become the next Paulina Rubio. But I was finally convinced to purchase the album after hearing the cumbia version of "El Dolor de tu Presencia" on the radio. What a beautiful song. There are many others on this album, including the spectacular cumbias, "Tu me completas", "A Fuego Lento", and "Ensename". I also loved the cumbia version of "Entre el Delirio y la Locura", which is a blend of 80s Tejano style and R&B lyrics. If you want to listen to a young artist who is on the forefront of Latin music, and quickly moving toward a place that only superstars like Selena and Gloria Estefan have been, purchase this album.
