Overview

Sylvie Lightner is a P.I. specializing in the unusual—in a world where magic is real, and Hell is just around the corner.

After escaping secret government cells and destroying a Miami landmark, Sylvie’s trying to lay low—something that gets easier when a magical force starts taking out her enemies. But these magical attacks are a risk to bystanders, and Sylvie can’t let that slide.

When the war between the government and the magical world threatens the three people closest to her—her assistant, her sister, and her lover—Sylvie has no choice but to get involved with hidden powers bent on shaping the world to their liking. Now, with death and disaster on the horizon, even if Sylvie wins, things will never be the same...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Paranormal investigator Sylvie Lightner has a lot on her mind: she has inadvertently helped create a new and disturbingly active god, and gained unwanted personal notoriety as the “New Lilith.” She could be forgiven for ignoring—or celebrating—a string of bloody supernatural attacks targeting Internal Surveillance and Investigation, the government-sanctioned stalkers of magical entities. If left unchecked, however, the casualties may include more than the expendable agents of the ISI, and this compels Sylvie to take an interest. Sylvie’s fourth adventure (after Gods & Monsters) is composed of equal parts cliché and convention. Despite being the focus of the story, Sylvie is never realized as a three-dimensional character, instead remaining a kick-ass rogue PI just like dozens of other protagonists. The familiar plot and characters sadly suggest that Benedict has entirely given up on attempting innovation. Agent: Caitlin Blasdell, Liza Dawson Associates. (May)

There was almost too much going on in this series edition. Almost too unbelievable. It worked out in the end and I guess we get little more insight into heroine's "powers". I do enjoy this series and hope to continue but we stiil don't really have a good insight into Sylvie's character. Hopefully we will find out more in the next sequel. There was definitely no lack of action in this book and it moved quickly. Would like to learn more about Demalion and Zoe as well as Sylvie in the next book.
