Overview

Max Larkin and Jesse Fairlane are the top two detectives in Rockton Illinois. In Lies to Die for, the second book in the Max Larkin Detective series, they are in pursuit of a killer that is branding letters into the victim's bodies. Is it someone the victims know or is it just a random person taking out frustrations on the small community of Rockton?

Max is fresh coming off of his one month suspension for hiding things from his captain while Jesse has been holding down the fort during his absence. There hasn't been much crime in Rockton since the Time Killer killings but Captain Perry knows he's going to need his whole team working together to catch the person that killed a local college professor and his girlfriend.

Just as the clues start to come together there's another murder. Max and Jesse find themselves disagreeing a lot as to who done it and why. This partnership is on the rocks and the town needs them now more than ever.

I read this author’s first book about 2 weeks ago and was really glad to get the notification that the second book in the series was already available! I snatched it up and read it in about 2 days, because the action and the mystery just kept me turning the pages well into the night. This book is even better than the first! I really liked detective Max Larkin in the first book, and this liking has been solidified even more by this second book. The author spent some extra time on building up and developing Larkin’s character and has succeeded in making him out to be a life-like figure. The plotting of this novel is also much tighter than in the first novel and the storyline is even more intriguing. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the final twist i.e. finding out who the real killer is, was a total surprise for me. Yet looking back on the clues skillfully hidden in the narrative throughout the book it really was the only logical conclusion. In other words, this book will keep you guessing right up to the very end. I highly recommend both of this authors books for some thrill filled holiday reading!

Another month, another serial killer case for Max and Jesse. This one is even more brutal and twisted than the Time Killer, taking lives of liars and unborn babies. Gruesome, dreadful, merciless murders happen one after another as the two detectives are trying to have normal lives, personal lives in particular, but in a surprise plot twist their personal lives must collide in order to solve the strange case. And even if in the beginning it doesn't look as personal to Detective Larkin as it did in Time Killer, it does so very quickly, even before you can say the word "liar". Another good read for the lovers of murder mysteries

I absolutely love suspense books and was of course excited to read the latest from Todd Thiede’s series. And, I have to say, that Lies to Die for kept me on the edge of my seat. I actually liked it even better than Time Killer. Note: you don’t have to read the first book in order to understand Lies. The action moves along quickly and the characters are memorable. Even some of the characters who are only in the book for a few chapters(and are later killed off) had me really feeling for them. There is enough details in the action scenes that I felt like I was on the scene but not too much that I was left feeling grossed out by any intricate detail. And, although the main story surrounds a thrilling drama filled investigation, I also enjoyed the side stories of the romantic relationships of Detective Max and Jess as well as some of the minor characters. The book is a real page turner and I will eagerly wait for the next installment.

Todd Thiede has done it again! Lies to Die For hooks you on the first page and doesn't let go. Great thrill ride!

Lies to Die for feels realistic, and it has lots of twists and turns. The author has been very skilled at keeping the fine balance between the suspense and the thrills of the story. I must admit that I grew fond of Max (the veteran) and Jesse (she is new to this game), due to their differences and the way she infuses new perspectives in the way Max solves his cases. Thiede knows how to engage the reader and makes you connect not only with the characters, but also with the setting: the small Town of Rockton, Illinois. I can't wait for the next book! Have no doubts that you will be kept guessing until the last few pages, and when you think you cracked the code, BOOM! Highly recommended

Gripping, this book keeps you on edge. I really like Max & Jesse, they make a good team. I do not like the way it ended, it kinda leaves you wondering which way Jesse is going to go sexually & is thinking of leaving the force. Still a good quick short (187 pages) read & very hard to put down. GJRA

Good story, but the writting reads like a person still in school. Hard to believe detectives talk in such childish ways. Really, how old is this author??????? Hard to recommend from that stand point.

This book had me hooked from the first page. It starts off with a double homicide in chapter one and the two detectives that are assigned to the case are like yin-yang. As they work to figure out who is the murder, the killer gets closer and closer to them. For me, I found myself identifying with one of the detectives (Max) and really wanted him to figure out who the killer was before he became his next victim. This book has great plot curve balls and will keep you guessing till the end. Great edge of your seat, keep me up all night until I’m done reading. This book reminds me why I prefer to spend long holiday weekends curled up on the couch with a good book

Max Larkin is a great character and Todd Thiede’s writing really impressed me. After starting out a little slow, this novel picked up nicely and finished very strong. The nice pacing and the level of detail and setting make this both fast-paced and engaging. The central mystery itself is exceptionally well done and has so many layers that you are never able to really trust what you think you know. I am looking forward to more great writing from Mr. Thiede. Great crime/mystery book. Totally recommended!

Detective Max Larkin takes center stage once again in another astounding book from Author Todd M. Thiede’s “Lies to Die For.” One word to describe this book: Gripping!  This one is definitely not for the faint at heart, as it will certainly send chills down your spine in an all out thrill ride of epic proportion. Having Read “Time Killer” and love it, I simply had to buy this book. Just as with the other Lies to Die For is brilliantly written in a faced-paced manner that will enthrall the mind and senses well into the late night hours. Lets just say that I had to sleep with the lights on and check the locks twice before going to bed.  Detective Larkin is after a serial killer in a unique and original plot that is full of hateful revenge. A professor by the name of Lawrence Feinstein is brutally murdered and the quest for finding the truth leads to a series of deaths marked with the letter L will have you wondering who is going to be next in line. The end will take your breath away with a twist you would not expect. Truly the work of a master storyteller! 5 amazing stars to Author Todd M. Thiede for this amazing new novel “Lies to Die for.”

I simply love this series, I was taken away by The Time Killer and now the author has recaptured me with this magnificently written book. The truth is, there is no getting around the magnetism of Max and Jesse as they do it all the best they can (well not exactly), creating another captivating and 100% interesting story.  Talent is talent and the author has shown it all off in this awesome book.

I made the mistake of beginning this book a few hours before bedtime. I really didn't get much sleep until I finished the book! It hooked me right from the start. The twists and turns dragged me along as Max and Jessie tried to figure out who the murderer is before any more innocent lives are lost. The case hits Max really close to home, and the ending will have you on the edge of your seat! I haven't read "Time Killer" yet, but now it is definitely going on my to be read list!

This present-day murder mystery is about a small town being menaced by a serial killer, soon after putting another serial killer in jail. Detective Max Larkin of the Rockton Police Department has just returned to work after taking a mandated psychological leave. Larkin and Jesse, his partner, are investigating a double homicide. After a third murder, suspicion falls on Liam, the hot-headed estranged husband of one of the victims. The circumstantial evidence is pretty strong, but it's not enough to force a confession. Larkin, whose instincts about a person's guilt or innocence are usually very good, is convinced that Liam is innocent. Jesse is just as convinced of his guilt. After Liam goes to jail, there is another dead body. Suspicion points in a totally different direction, toward someone a lot closer to Max and Jesse. After that possibility is no longer a possibility, another person is found dead. Can Max and Jesse stop the killer before Max becomes the next victim? This one is really good. It feels realistic, and it has lots of twists and turns. The reader will be kept guessing until the last few pages. It is very much worth reading.

Book two will grasp readers by the horns tightly and not let go until the heart-pounding finish. Theide's wild imagination is luminous in this novel and many will applaud the glorious return of Max and Jesse and find it to be quite a thriller. There's a perfect balance of genres between humor, romance and mystery which has the potential to appeal to any book lover. It can easily be read as a stand alone, but in order to engage in the full experience, I highly recommend reading Time Killer first. Fan-friggin-tastic!

If there were a way to give 0 stars I would have. I found the torture murders too graphic. I read mostly suspense and mystery novels and these were among the most disturbing accounts I've ever read. I probably could have gotten beyond that if the rest of the book weren't so badly written. Books written in the present tense are off-putting to me. I won't waste my time finishing this book. I'm glad I only paid $1.99 for it.

Did not like this book at all. The plot made no sense, and the author didn't end sentences with a quotation mark, he carried the quotation mark over to the next line by itself. I thought that was very poor. People don't just kill other people because they were lied to. That premise makes no sense to me.

This concoction of sex and murder is only 187 pages, but it seems much longer. The male police detective is paired with a lesbian partner. THey work fairly well together. THe murders keep coming and coming. THe male almost gets killed. If I hadn't said that I would review this, I would have discarded it--which is what is going to happen now!
