Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
For 70 years, LIFE magazine has been defining and redefining photojournalism. Its incomparable archive of images serves as the basis of this platinum anniversary collection. This oversized, modestly priced hardcover contains nearly 300 classic photographs, taking you through seven decades of social and cultural change; celebrity sightings; war and domestic unrest; and everyday life in hometown America. The most memorable images of your lifetime.
Library Journal
This sumptuous large-format book, illustrated with nearly 300 remarkable color and black-and-white photographs, provides an overview of 70 years of the most influential photography magazine on the planet. Robert Sullivan (executive editor, LIFE) offers a brief yet fascinating history of the magazine. Richard B. Stolley, a reporter, writer, and editor at LIFE and a founding editor of People, contributes an insightful essay aptly titled "The Power of LIFE." This beautifully designed and produced book is then arranged into chapters on the presidency, photo essays, Hollywood, war, science and nature, sports, and culture. It concludes with sections titled "Just for Fun," "The Covers," and "In Parting," each beginning with a one-page description and followed by carefully selected, painstakingly edited, and richly captioned photographs laid out in the tradition of the magazine itself. Here are all the familiar classic images (e.g., Dorothea Lange's image of a California farm woman in the Great Depression) and photo essays (e.g., W. Eugene Smith's "Country Doctor"), as well as those less well known. With an interesting section featuring all the magazine's covers, this book clearly succeeds in demonstrating the immense and enduring power of photography. An unbelievable value at this price; essential for both popular and academic collections.-Raymond Bial, First Light Photography, Urbana, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
