Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
This appealing "Life and Times" series offers information to middle readers about several ancient societies and their principal cities, food, transportation, clothing, homes, religion, and entertainment. Each title briefly describes farming and the countryside, as well as armies and warfare. The text is concise but lively; illustrations are detailed watercolor paintings supplemented by photos of artifacts from each culture. In this title (set in the time of Pericles), readers will learn mostly about the city-state of Athens with spreads on the Acropolis, the agora, the theater, and the assembly. Young historians will find pages about elaborate dinner parties called "symposia" and the Olympic Games especially interesting (in the all-male games, athletes competed naked so women were barred from attending), while a page about Sparta reveals that the Spartans had a harsh, military culture requiring all males to serve for twenty-three years. The spread about the countryside shows a small farm outside Athens where olives are being harvested and pressed, though overall, the authors depict life in Athens as focused on Athenian citizenship, good health, and local democracy (foreigners, slaves, and women could not participate). History buffs will enjoy the quiz for readers and a fascinating foldout map of Greece and the Aegean region, locating Crete, Troy, and Mount Olympus with its gods and goddesses. For libraries, teachers, and parents, this well-produced series is an especially good bargain for its modest price. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
