Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debbie Levy
Based on material first published in the 2000 "Sightseers" series, this paperback guide to the ancient city of Rome devotes two-page spreads to thirteen different aspects of Roman life. Transportation, homes, theater, the public baths, the Circus Maximus, and more are included. The authors have a keen eye for fun facts that are likely to appeal to young readers. Who would not be fascinated to learn that Romans cleaned themselves by rubbing oil into their skin and scraping it off with a special blunt metal instrument? Or that the most popular cooking sauce was made from salted fish guts left out in the sun? Each of these mini-chapters contains a brief narrative of the subject at hand, plus colorful illustrations accompanied by extensive captions. Illustrations are mostly drawings, but also include museum reproductions. Back matter includes a quiz to help readers review what they have learned about life in Rome, and a large, color fold-out map of the ancient city. Reviewer: Debbie Levy
