Children's LiteratureThis is an extremely attractive book about mosquitoes. It covers: "What is a mosquito?" "Mosquitoes up close," "What is a life cycle?" "Inside the egg," "Little larvae," "A pupa transforms," "An adult emerges," "Ready to mate," "Mosquito bites," "Laying eggs," "A dangerous life," "Watch out!" and "How to stay safe." Each part of the life cycle is explained in detail with accompanying pictures. There are labeled pictures both for the male and females. Helpful information is given in a section called "Beat the bite!" There's lots of humor, such as "Tough stuff," which explains how mosquitoes survive, and "Tucked in Tight," which is about dormant embryos. The photographs are extremely clear and labeled. The cover commands exploration of the book. The controlled vocabulary is suitable for a wide range of reading levels and interest. A glossary and index are included as well as a list of websites. This is a Bobbie Kalman Book and part of "The Life Cycle" series. Best of all it is a treasure house of information paperback that is affordable for home and school and library. 2004, Crabtree Publishing Company, and Ages 8 to 12.
