Overview

The world's grasslands are rich habitats that support an incredible diversity of life from the smallest insects to the largest predators such as the lion and the puma. Life Cycles: Grasslands by Sean Callery explores how ten of these creatures from diverse environments—including the African savannah, the North American prairies, and the South American pampas—are all interrelated in three grassland food chains. At the end of each spread, a picture clue lets readers guess which predator is next on the chain. The combination of bright design, clear structure, and appealing wildlife make this a great introduction to life in grasslands around the world.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
True or false: no two zebras look the same. True. Each zebra stripe pattern is different, like a human fingerprint. Zebra skin is also black underneath the white stripes. Find out more about habitats of zebras and how grasslands support them as well as an incredible diversity of animal life in this title. Each of the eleven chapters is a two-page spread with chapter headings consistent in size and placement. At the beginning of each chapter is a side bar with animal silhouettes indicating the sequence of chapters. At the end of each spread, a reading and picture clue lets readers guess which predator is next on the chain. Each page reflects the color of the front and back cover of the book. A table of contents, introduction, glossary, web resources, and index, as well as an illustrated North American prairie food web, is included. Reader support is provided through photographs, page numbers, fact boxes, and two-page spreads limited to one animal each. Published as part of the "Life Cycles" series, this title describes the life cycles of the zebra, hyena, lion, vulture, grasshopper, rhea, cougar, prairie dog, rattlesnake, American badger, and coyote. Descriptions of how the animals live, reproduce, and link within food chains and webs is discussed. Other titles in the series, which explores Earth's key ecosystems, include: Desert, Forest, Mountain, Ocean, Polar Lands, Rainforest and River. Although the many additional features make this a wonderful resource or reference for school age children and their teachers, some early or challenged learners may find it difficult to attend to the information-packed pages.
