Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Superficial introductions that are likely to confuse rather than enlighten children. Each exclamation-filled book provides examples of various plants, animals, birds, and other creatures that live in the type of habitat under discussion. However, the specific locale is often omitted in the text and in photo captions. The busy layouts include paragraphs on several topics per page. Miscellaneous words appear in larger type, but they are not necessarily the ones included in the glossary. A "How would you survive-" page advising would-be explorers on possible threats illustrates some of the books' potential to confuse. "Wetland dangers" include hippopotamus, alligator, and anaconda-creatures unlikely to live anywhere near each other except in a zoo. The books offer no suggestions for further research or reading, a definite necessity for anyone trying to write a report or searching for more in-depth information about some of the many topics mentioned in passing.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
