Library Journal
Nilsson has already changed the world. His photograph of an 18-week-old human embryo appeared on a 1965 cover of Lifemagazine. Since then, he has continued his exploration of the world inside the human body. Framed against a black background allowing viewers to focus on each figure's intense color and intricate detail, each of the 150 photographs appears to be foreign landscapes possessing an ethereal quality. The first section of the book is a journey to the very beginnings of human life that opens with images of DNA and chromosomes, includes photographs of human conception, and ends with the birth of a baby. The second section is devoted to human organs and tissue. Striking images include a glowing, glasslike red and orange ball (the stomach), a teal-colored stream of spaghetti (cells in the nose), and a blue lake and mountainous landscape at sunset (the eye's macula). Nilsson has also incorporated images of diseases, including cancer, HIV, and SARS. The photographs are stunning works of scientific art. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.
