Life of Benjamin Spock

Life of Benjamin Spock

by Judith Kaye

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Series entries that feature the lives and accomplishments of two pioneering physicians. Childhood, education, and early professional activities are discussed, but the books focus primarily on the major body of work of each man. Spock's fame as author of Baby and Child Care is described, with an emphasis on his later years as a political activist. Williams's landmark heart surgery, his work to open nursing and other medical training facilities to African Americans, and his headship of Freedmen's Hospital are explained. In both volumes, adequate but uninspired prose is broken up with black-and-white photographs that illustrate events in each doctor's life. These titles will prove useful to middle-grade report writers and to secondary students needing lower reading levels.-Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School, TX
