About the Author

John Forster (1812-1876) was a British biographer, editor, and critic—an intimate and peer of the leading literary lights of his day, such as Dickens, Browning, and Carlyle.  He is best remembered today for his biography of Charles Dickens (1872-74), but he also wrote biographies of Oliver Goldsmith (1848) and Jonathan Swift (1875), among others.
