Overview

Since his death in 1930 at the age of 44, D H Lawrence has become a legend as both a writer and a man. In The Life of D H Lawrence, Keith Sagar has written an authentic, vivid biography, drawing on the five thousand five hundred Lawrence letters now available, and the many accounts of him by his relatives, friends and contemporaries. He tells the story directly and dramatically, revealing the dynamics of
Lawrence's worldwide quest (both as traveler and as 'thought-adventurer') for a way of life he could recognize as both fully human and deeply religious. The book is illustrated throughout with 150 pictures, many in color, including those of his friends and associates, places he lived in and wrote about, and his paintings. In The Life of D H Lawrence, Keith Sagar has written not only about Lawrence the creator of some of the finest works in every genre of modern literature, but also the creator of 'that piece of supreme art, a man's life'.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), probably the most colorful and controversial of modernist writers, has inspired numerous scholarly biographies and personal memoirs. The Cinderella story of a son of a Midlands coal miner who, convinced of his own genius, left a job as a schoolteacher to become an international literary giant is hard to resist. Sagar (formerly reader in English literature, Manchester Univ.) has written prolifically about both Lawrence and Ted Hughes. This new book is not meant to replace or compete with such works as the three-volume John Worthen and others' The Cambridge Biography of D.H. Lawrence. Sagar draws a concise and compelling picture of Lawrence's life in one volume, including new information drawn from Lawrence's letters. Heavily illustrated, the book includes photographs of Lawrence, his family and friends, and places he lived and visited, as well as reproductions of a selection of Lawrence's artwork. Given Lawrence's peripatetic life, the book serves as a kind of travelog as well as a biography. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries. Alison M. Lewis, Drexel Univ. Lib., Philadelphia Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
