Overview

Some of the world’s greatest paintings depict scenes from the life of Jesus, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Baptism, the Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, the Trail, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension.

In addition to the book’s main large paintings, magnificently reproduced, smaller paintings are used as commentary. Moreover, symbolic elements, such as the lily, the dove and the open book in the Annunciation are explained, and each of the people represented is identified through a graphic reduction of the main painting. The New Testament texts accompanying each image adumbrate and enhance each visual scene, deepening the reader’s understanding of the painting.

A clear, informative and visually pleasurable introduction to Jesus’ life as rendered by some of the greatest painters of all time.

Introduces the life of Jesus as rendered by renowned artists, focusing on the symbolism found in such paintings as Raphael's "The Transfiguration of Christ" and da Vinci's "The Last Supper."

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This artistic introduction takes readers through Jesus' life--from the Annunciation to the Resurrection--as depicted in some of the masterpieces of Western art. Among them are Raphael's "The Transfiguration of Christ," da Vinci's "The Last Supper" and van Eyck's "The Crucifixion." The book's large format (9 and 5/8 inches by 13 inches) allows for generous reproductions of the art, permitting readers to linger on tiny artistic details that would not be easily visible in smaller editions. Here, for example, we can read the Greek letters issuing from Gabriel's mouth during the Annunciation, or investigate the enamel and pearl decorations that adorn a Byzantine eucharistic chalice. The brief commentaries are truly helpful and are geared for the beginner, as are the author biographies and timeline at the back of the book. This is a lovely, full-color primer. Children's Literature
Throughout the ages artists have been inspired by Jesus and the key events in his life to create some of their most potent works. A collection of extraordinary art interpreting moments in Jesus' life is presented in this coffee table book for middle school students. The works collected span the centuries and cover a number of media, such as oil painting, stained glass, sculpture, mosaic, carving, medieval manuscript illustration, and more. Some of the works here are sure to provoke strong thoughts and feelings about Jesus as a historical figure and Jesus as the central figure in Christianity. Art lovers will delight in the absorbing works, which are explained in a meaningful way for those who may be familiar with them and for the uninitiated. Many of the detailed paintings contain subjects (people and landmarks) that will be unfamiliar to readers. With both visual aids and text, the book does an excellent job of putting each work in context and explaining the unfamiliar subjects. Concise biographies of the artists, as well as a time line of Jesus' life, are provided at the back of the book. This title, which is a tremendous resource for art, religion, and history courses, is one in the publisher's "Art Revelations" series. 2003, Enchanted Lion Books, Ages 8 to 12.
