Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
NeonSeon's potato-headed protagonist Shouty returns in this second installment to the "Life of Shouty" series, which finds the rotund character troubled by his increasingly expanding waistline. Determined to improve his health, Shouty resolves to work out and cut fatty foods from his diet. However, his old habits and food cravings refuse to let him go without a fight. Can he motivate himself to stay on the path to good health? A sequel to NeonSeon's Life of Shouty: Good Habits, this second rhyming book actually improves on the first book, which ended with Shouty only resolving to stop his slothful habits without making actual improvements. This time, NeonSeon shows Shouty genuinely struggling to overcome his weight and health issues—which NeonSeon personalizes through the ghost-like blobby "Munchies" that follow and tempt Shouty with milkshakes and cookies until he finds the strength to resist them. It's a funny, offbeat tale that says a few good things about health and willpower. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD
School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—Short, rhyming sentences convey Shouty's realization that he has gained 50 pounds and he asks, "Will I choose the right path to be healthy or not?" A cartoon character whose head is the shape of a potato, he appears to be an adult, since he takes the elevator to his desk job and has sole control over his food and activity choices. He banishes fattening foods; tries to curb cravings for junk food, which are depicted by gray ghostlike figures; and dreams of the athletic prowess he might gain as a lighter person. One page features his journal entries of food choices and exercise, another shows a blender with kale and mango. Readers seeking inspiration for better health choices are likely to be annoyed by the singsong text and simple, computer-generated cartoon illustrations set in a book the size of a beginning reader. Children may not relate to this didactic account of Shouty's life or his newfound ability to manage it—there is not a friend, family member, teacher, or cafeteria in sight.—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI
