Philip Edward Thomas (1878-1917) was born in London to a Welsh family. Considered one of Britain’s finest poets, he enlisted in the Artists’ Rifles to fight the Great War, and died as a result of combat injuries suffered in France. His poems, almost all produced during the war, were collected in 1920. He was also a prolific book critic and nature writer.
