Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Without energy there would be no life; transformation of energy from one form to another makes things happen. In this appealing "Energy in Action" series, tweens and even teens can learn how energy works in many different spheres. Each book includes big double-page spreads that define energy, matter, forces, and their interactions, using examples highlighting the book's topic. In this volume, the authors introduce types of energy used by plants and animals, starting with potential and kinetic, and including chemical, electrical, heat, light, and sound energy. Light energy, for example, is shown through a colorful drawing of a plant absorbing sunlight, using chlorophyll to produce sugar, while roots absorb water and minerals—especially vivid is a photo of a huge striped bee using ultraviolet light to find flowers heavy with pollen. Other photos show the breakdown of chemical energy (fungi on a rotting apple and bacteria on bread). Kinetic energy is explained and illustrated with action photos of a springing antelope, a powerful locust, and jellyfish contracting their bells to move by jet propulsion. Animals also use energy for temperature control while some creatures, like crickets and barking dogs, use sound energy to communicate; whales and dolphins, as another example, hear sound when energy passes through water. Each book is sprinkled with "It's a Fact" sidebars conveying basic information and "Snapshots" about scientists like Democritus, who first thought of atoms and Dutch scientist Jan Ingenhousz, main discoverer of photosynthesis. A "Future Flash" page explains that scientists are studying powerful ostrich leg joints to help create better artificial legs for humans. The books have an energy of their own with backgrounds of lively greens, blues, lavenders, and golds; photos are placed just where they're needed, both well-selected and clearly reproduced. An excellent value for the modest price! Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
