All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Life on the Murder Scene combines two classic ways for a band to bide time in one convenient package: it's a live album and a live DVD. Actually, it's even a little bit more than that, since the live DVD also contains two TV appearances, a selection of performances originally aired online, the videos from My Chemical Romance's 2004 major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and three "Making the Video" segments -- and there's a second DVD, containing a "Video Diary," where the bandmembers spend two hours talking and talking: talking about their influences, talking about why they make music (basically, to save lives, whether it's theirs or their fans), ...

Life on the Murder Scene combines two classic ways for a band to bide time in one convenient package: it's a live album and a live DVD. Actually, it's even a little bit more than that, since the live DVD also contains two TV appearances, a selection of performances originally aired online, the videos from My Chemical Romance's 2004 major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and three "Making the Video" segments -- and there's a second DVD, containing a "Video Diary," where the bandmembers spend two hours talking and talking: talking about their influences, talking about why they make music (basically, to save lives, whether it's theirs or their fans), talking about each other, talking about how they met, talking about comic book art, talking about 9/11, talking about signing to a major label, talking about touring, talking about "becoming more theatrical," talking about how they're "anti-rock & roll", talking about how "there's no groupies, that's the best part of My Chemical Romance fans." Basically, talking about anything that's happened to the band, which makes this less of a day-by-day video diary and more of an insanely detailed two-hour documentary about a band that is on the cusp of breaking big. In other words, not the thing to convert the skeptics who were not convinced that MCR is a generation-defining band based on "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and "Helena," but it's a gift designed for those 25-and-unders whose lives were saved by Three Cheers. It's stuffed to the gills with live performances and ephemera, the kind that wears its repetition proudly (no less than seven different appearances of "I'm Not Okay [I Promise]," for instance), and it takes the hearty soul of a fanatic to sort through it all. For all others, Life on the Murder Scene is a test of patience -- the CD less so, since the live renditions are enhanced by rhythms that are tougher on-stage than they are on record (which tends to ground Gerard Way's hammy vocals), and there's also less of it, so it's easier to digest. But only the dedicated could sort through the four hours of video here, plus the hour of music. They'll do so happily, and be pleased that they can get all this stuff in one convenient package, but Life on the Murder Scene is such a piece of product for a particular moment -- a moment when MCR had been voted Band of the Year for Spin, but have yet to cross over into the mass popular consciousness; a moment when the band needs new material to keep its momentum going, yet has nothing ready; most importantly, a moment when their adolescent angst resonates with a particular generation that is slowly, inevitably reaching a point where the angst no longer makes sense -- that will always exist as a snapshot of this point in time and never be much more than that.

Passionate, interesting and heaps of fun!

"Life on the Murder Scene" is an intense and interesting look into the lives of the New Jersey 4 + 1 (Bob is from Chicago). The live CD and the performances in the DVD really show what MCR put into their performing. They scream, spit and slash through each song with so much passion and raw energy that you're surprised they're still standing. The video diary let's you know what it is they're doing and why it is they're doing it. It proves how important each member of the band is in shaping My Chemical Romance. It goes through the sky high & the rock bottom moments in their career. But, behind all the drama and passion, we see a bunch a guys just having some fun and taking a stab at something a little different. They're pretty damn funny and sooo adorable, and don't seem to have a problem with poking fun at themselves. Or eachother. There's also a behind the scenes of their videos which is pretty interesting and fun. All in all, at the end of it you feel so much closer to the band and you really appreciate what it is they're doing. Well, I think so anyway.

A Real Look at a Great Band

This was the first MCR dvd/cd release that I purchased. Being a huge MCR Fan it showed me everything a fan could possibly hope for. The video diary was perfect in letting us see MCR go through tough and good times to get where they are today. The footage including the making of the video was very impressive along with the live performances wich were fully amazing and totally showed how MCR performs during shows. I highly recomend for any My Chem fan to purchse LOTMS it will make your nat'l MCR Day 10x better if you have not already bought the dvd/cd.

    I Also Recommend:

this band is soo terrible and they are such a huge disgrace

i really dislike this band they are not orginial and when they made the black parade album they ripped off tons of other metal bands like guns n roses and mushroomhead and slipknot and children of bodom and dream theater this band is seriously terrible live and in the studio this band should have stopped making cds after they made three cheers for sweet revenge actually i beileve this band should never have formed in the first place because they are downright terrible and awefull

A must buy for MCR fans

Well where do I start? This is the most amazing thing I have ever watched. The audio CD is not very impressive but the DVDs...wow just plain wow. The video diary was all around amazing. They didn't go too far with the details, but they showed the right amount of everything The DVD with the performances on it was wonderful. I could watch it again and again.

On your mother's eyes, say a prayer...

Combining a video diary, live DVD and live CD this is an absoloutely fantastic buy and a must have for every My Chemical Romance fan. Whether you've been a fan for years or have only recently heard of the band, I guarantee the video diary will make you laugh, smile and bring tears to your eyes. The boys let you see what it's really like to be a member of My Chemical Romance without cutting out the more frightening details, making each and every fan feel a part of the band. On the live CD, you also get a bonus track, titled Desert Song. The vocals on this song are awe-inspiring to say the least and is definetely a contender to be one of the best songs by My Chemical Romance. The live DVD is something you can watch over and over again, each performance, whether on stage or on a TV show is outstanding and brings a hint of theatre into modern rock and roll. I could not reccomend it more.

Awesome. As best as you can get 'em. LOVE IT.

This CD/2DVD is amazing. I think it's the best band dvd ever. When I watched the diary, i was addicted to it. I got to know a lot more of the guys then ever before. It shows the very beginnings, struggles, good times, bad, etc. I mean, I think it covers just about everything as far as the road for the guys and their careers go. They never leave anyone out. They also have funny homefootages from the boys--it's in the diary, come on randomly. It's so in depth, funny, amazing, sad, everything. You're going to be hooked. Whoever produced it did a really good job. And the boys talk a lot to. You get to see that thry're really nice, down-to-earth guys. And that they're just as messed up as you are, and have overcome really bad obsticles. They're super smart too. LOVE IT. The music disk is kick BUTT--seriously. And the live perfomances with the making of/music videos, SUPER COOL. I feel like I'm right there in the concerts. (I wish I were there though.) So yeah, I RECOMEND THIS! Worth EVERY PENNY. MCR kicks BUTT n are the BEST AND AMAZING BAND EVER. Peace and Love.

    Awesome CD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This CD was awesome. It has an audio disc of live performances and two DVD's. The first DVD has the video diary which is a documentary on what MCR's been doing for the past year and it also tells you a lot about them. The second DVD has live performances, all four videos, and the making of the first three. If you're a HUGE fan like me, or at least a fan, seriously, BUY THIS CD !
