But can a significant and satisfying twenty-first-century womanhood really be defined from Scripture? One that can apply to all women and yet not be guilty of cookie-cutter sameness, pressing everyone into a common mold? One that will stay fresh even as a woman grows older? One that can guide her to the best in life? The answer is yes, and the result is a femininity without excesses and regrets that mark those who just go with the flow of the world.
In Life Ready Woman, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn helps readers take five faith steps drawn from the Bible that will help to define the best life possible. Well, if you know me or follow my posts at all, you have probably picked up on the fact that I am a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.
I commute at least an hour one way most days to my full-time job (and then back again). I have a young son (who will be turning 6 soon). I am the wife of a hardworking man. Oh yeah, and I write a bit on the side when I am able. (Which is really my outlet for the thoughts swirling in my head and is primarily my way of sharing with others what my Lord Jesus has done in my life and what He can do in anyone's life.)
Of course there are plenty of details I left out in that little life summary of mine, but you get the point.
I truly am a woman who lives "in a do-it-all world." And I am trying to thrive in it, with God's help.
So, when I heard Shaunti Feldhahn on the radio on FamilyLife Today talking with the hosts about her new book and study, The Life Ready Woman, I was completely intrigued. She described my life. She described my emotions. My struggles. My desires. She described me.
And, being a former Wall Street analyst as well as a current national speaker and syndicated news columnist, Shaunti knows what it's like to live in today's woman's world. Her research studies and writing along with that of Robert Lewis' truly get to the heart of what women today need to hear. They hit right where we need encouragement and tangible direction.
Shaunti and Robert don't just speak to women like me, but they specifically address, encourage, and guide all types of women in all seasons of life. Additionally, Life Ready Woman is just a portion of a larger vision and project called LifeReady which reaches far beyond female audiences. If Life Ready Woman is any indication, I would have to say that this LifeReady project truly will impact people, marriages, and families in a mighty way for the ultimate glory of our Lord.
Now, as you are considering this book for yourself or someone you know, I am off to get myself a copy of the study workbook based on it. Who knows...you may see me leading an online Bible study of this soon...

Burn-out. Lots of women know exactly what burn-out is. In today's culture, women have opportunities that the generations before them did not have. However, those opportunities have come with both the good and the bad. Women can dream, travel, and live like never before. Unfortunately, many women end up disillusioned and find that after spending thousands of dollars and years of their lives, they simply want to return to taking care of their home and family. So, how does one avoid burn-out and disillusionment? By living as a Life Ready Woman. A Life Ready Woman is a woman who knows who she is in God's eyes and follows his callings on her life, whether those callings include being a stay-at-home mom or a world-traveling, high-powered executive. Either way, the authors assert that there are three core callings a woman should fulfill. Purposely living out those callings enables a woman to be abundant and fruitful without the burn-out.
During the Introduction of this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. I am happy to say that reading The Life Ready Woman was a great experience. The authors expertly walk a fine line between encouraging women to take hold of opportunities and warning women that they can not do it all, at least not all at the same time. The myth that a woman can have it all and do it all, all at the same time was a lesson that I learned the hard way previous to reading this book. The book confirmed what I had already experienced. A woman can enjoy all that life has to offer, but there are appropriate stages of life in which she should make the choice to pursue those things.
I appreciated that the book had Biblically-based ideas, though some of them were quite new to me. The chapter on the Biblical definition of womanhood, marriage, and family was especially good. Too often women in the church are told that motherhood is their highest and only calling. To read this chapter was liberating for me as I am a firm believer that I exist for more than just reproduction. The concept of the three core callings for every Christian woman was also excellent. Using Scripture as their basis, the authors opened up a concept that was new and exciting to me. Every Christian woman should read this book.

Do you ever wonder if you're living the life God has in store for you?
Do you ever wonder how you can do everything and do it well?
Does it seem like it's hard to be a modern woman and still live life from a biblical perspective?
Are you living life according to God's best plan for you or the world's best plan?
In Life Ready Woman, Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis address the issues that modern woman face; issues that are completely different than those our mothers and grandmothers encountered. With so many opportunities available to woman today, we can do anything we want and we can become anything we want. The key is making sure we are following the individual compass God has provided each of us. Life Ready Woman takes a look at the biblical guidelines for being a woman as well as the biblical guidelines of being a wife and explains how we can, and should, apply these concepts in our lives so that we can live as "Life Ready" women - clear about our lives, bold in our faith and able to find God's best for us.
This book was such an encouraging book; I learned so much about what God has to say about being a woman and being a wife. This book definitely keeps it real, reminding woman that you can never really "have it all" - something will suffer if you try and do everything, it might be your job, it might be your relationship with your kids, it might be your own wants and desires. It's definitely the truth, many woman are torn between jobs and family in our modern society. The idea here is that we trust God and his plan and really follow his calling for our lives.
The first section of this book takes a look at what God desires for our lives while the second half shows how you can take the steps to live that life. Topics covered include stewarding the gifts God has given you, wisdom with a man and being God's servant. The authors are careful to include information for woman at all stages of life from single to widowed and make sure to give examples for these different stages.
Life Ready Woman is based on a video Bible study series; after reading this book, I am very interested in being a part of such a study. I would recommend this book to every woman, it's never a bad thing to take a look at your life and how it compares to what God has planned for you.
