2009 Hardcover First edition New in new jacket More than a series of portraits, photographer Matt Albiani's collection of sun-soaked images is designed to capture the essence of ... summer. His charming introduction sets a nostalgic, magical tone for summers spent beside the water, imbued with a sense of respect for the work of the lifeguard and its symbolic status. The juxtaposition of saturated color photographs with the subtlety and shadow of their black and white counterparts, is emphasized by Sam Shahid's narrative layout and design making Lifeguard on Duty a visually captivating volume, destined to be a classic in the genre. 124 pp. Read more Show Less

“To most of us beach bums, lifeguards look like vaunted kings in their wooden castles, lording over both our safety in the waves and our red-shorted nap-time fantasies. But to photographer Matt Albiani, they’re art.”
—The Out Traveler

Matt Albiani built his reputation shooting celebrity portraits and fashion spreads for the likes of Elle and Vanity Fair. For his first book, however, he trained his lens on a different class of beautiful people, one more rugged, less glamorous, and yet unassailably iconic: the American lifeguard. A lifeguard himself in college, Albiani returned to the beaches of the U.S. to wax visual poetic on the golden summer days of his youth. Lifeguard on Duty collects the results of his years of travel across the country, from Oahu, Hawaii to Nantucket, Massachusetts, capturing these brave men in all their strength and solitude. With expressive framing and subtle composition, Albiani creates a unique and elegant portrait of the life of a guard.

    Beach Scenes: Summer Reveries

Matt Albiani has a romance with the sea. In this very straightforward collection of full-page images of lifeguards on duty there is no secondary message. These images are simply of healthy, tanned, lithe young men in colorful swim suits sitting in their station towers, or leaning or lying or standing - always with an eye for incipient danger but seemingly completely in control of the situation. Turning the pages of this photographic essay lulls the viewer into that trance that happens when the surf constantly rolls onto the sand, or the water's edge approaches and recedes, or simply laps at pool's lip - memories of warm and hot summer breezes that tend to fade with autumn's advance. Images in both black and white and color give some variety in this at times repetitious monograph while Albiani concentrates on capturing these healthy young men in action and in repose. This book is more for the coffee table meant to offer the reader a visual retreat to the pleasures of summer.
