Overview

This book explains the physical principles of light, the color spectrum, and the color wheel that shows the relationships among complementary and secondary colors. Theory is then demonstrated in practical terms with instructions and illustrations of works in progress and examples of effective use of light and color in famous paintings by artists including Caspar David Friedrich, Vincent Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, and many others. Titles in Barron's Painter's Corner art instruction series speak to serious amateur artists, as well as to students enrolled in art classes. Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Using examples from such artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Paul Cezanne, each volume in this series focuses on painting or drawing in a specific style or genre. Theory flows directly into application so that effects may be understood and then replicated. Light and Color focuses on general principles such as light sources and color wheels and then becomes more detailed, offering suggestions for different media, such as pastels, charcoals, inks, and oils, and various subjects, including landscapes, figure drawing, and still life. Illustrated step-by-step exercises encourage artists to apply the techniques that are discussed. Sidebars list advanced techniques, trouble-shooting advice, and the principles that each exercise illustrates. Although directed toward intermediate to advanced artists, this series would be appropriate for more advanced beginners looking to broaden their knowledge and refine technique. Filled with beautiful illustrations and detailed text, this series will inspire any artist. (The Painter's Corner). Library Journal
There is an abundance of material on how to create luminous works in a variety of media (for example, see John Hammond's Capturing Light in Acrylics). Deibler's book, however, is the only one to isolate the array of light effects specific to landscapes. Deibler defines the four keys to the successful painting of light as shape, value, color, and edges. The book is packed with solid information-often in "tip boxes" that provide useful bites of information-and illustrated with Deibler's accomplished and highly varied work. From the Colorado Rockies to Venice and the New England seashore one sees how light in every season defines and invigorates landscape. Light and Color is another volume in Barron's fine "The Painter's Corner" series. A translation of a 2002 Spanish publication, it is a remarkably broad and useful look at the uses of color in creating luminous artwork. The first half presents the theoretical foundations of contrasts involving color and light. Examples from painters throughout the history of art illustrate each point. The second half makes use of ten exercises on a variety of themes introduced in the first half. Brief yet cogent, they span still lifes, landscapes, interiors, and the figure. Both titles deserve a place in most art instruction collections. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
