Light Fantastic

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Steve Roach has been composing space, trance, and ambient music for so long, you could call him the Supreme Conquistador of Sound. LIGHT FANTASTIC's concept, or "trip," is refraction, the deflection of an energy wave when passing from one substance like air into a heavier substance like water or glass. If the new medium is transparent, the light will refract into a radiant display of color. Roach offers six fantastical sound-phases to illustrate this concept: "Trip the Light," "Breathing the Pulse," "The Reflecting Chamber," "Touch the Pearl," "Realm of Refraction," and "The Luminous Return." Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Roach offers six fantastical sound-phases to illustrate this concept: "Trip the Light," "Breathing the Pulse," "The Reflecting Chamber," "Touch the Pearl," "Realm of Refraction," and "The Luminous Return." Unique rhythmic patterns, or "fractal groove creation infusions" entrance the mind, even though they rattle along like a cosmic jalopy with worn wheel-bearings. The vast edges of Roach's universe are sharp and polished to a crystalline sheen. In "Realm of Refraction," tonal dissonances refract in a champagne-like effervescence while the rays of light sting like lasers over a dynamic groove of African percussion. With trippy space music of this type best heard on good headphones and resonant speakers, the listener could end up out-there-somewhere. How to get back to reality? On the lengthy final track, Roach offers "collapsing notes," like crystal cords on which you can slide back down -- though the ultimate destination of this hour-long trip is up to you. Collaborators on LIGHT FANTASTIC include Vidna Obmana, Vir Unis, and Stefin Gordon.
All Music Guide - John Bush
Roach's second album of 1999 is, like the first, a collaboration with Vir Unis, though the material departs Roach's usual field of geographical inspiration for the realm of visible light. The six lengthy tracks coast over waves of ambient bliss with a series of skittery percussion lines that manage to draw on the physics of light refraction quite well. Another featured player, Vidna Obmana, brings his mastery of ambient noise to the mix, though the credits are a bit difficult to cipher Obmana: "fujara sample food performance". With his tamboura, Stefin Gordon fills in the Eastern slant to "The Reflecting Chamber." In total, Light Fantastic is a very digital work, continually plumbing the depths of crisp sound and gong-like reverberations. As usual with material by Roach, mere descriptions fail to conjure the acres of beautiful, expansive sound produced. The analogy of light that inspired the work is perhaps the best description of all.
