A collection of excerpts from twenty-five of the most important of the Christian mystics, ranging from the second to the twentieth century.
Library Journal - Library JournalFocusing on 25 Christian writers (mainly pre-18th century), this has both a general introduction and individual brief discussions of each mystic included. All featured writers refer to experience (though not always in the private sphere) as well as to cognitive insights. Starting with Origen and Gregory of Nyssa and ending with Thomas Merton and Henri Le Saux (Abhishiktananda), this also incorporates lesser figures (Jean-Marie Guyon) and an occasional Protestant (Jonathan Edwards) as well as the standard Catholic giants (e.g., Augustine of Hippo). A substantive work, greatly enriched by the introduction's scholarly discussion. EC
