Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Is light a particle or a wave? How did Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discover X-rays? In this installment of the "Discovery Channel School Science" series, a great deal is explained about light, in short bursts. Divided into two page segments, the book uses a Q&A segment to introduce some of the basics of sunlight. This interview with a sunbeam is slightly cloying, but the information is good. And the rest of the book is great. The sections include an interview with eye surgeon Sylvia Norton, and a look at how animals' eyes differ from humans. Each section has an activity. Illustrations are photos and drawings, which break up the page and provide connections to children. For example, a photo of a kid's face reflecting off of a door knob shows the distortions of a round surface, and a silly looking kid. The book includes a table of contents and a puzzle with a solution on the last page. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing
